Overview: The SBU (Sideband Use) pins in a USB Type-C connector are specifically allocated for Alternate Mode signals and not for standard USB data or power transfer. These pins are primarily used to carry signals for protocols like DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, enabling them to utilize the USB Type-C connector
Alternate Mode: USB Type-C supports “Alternate Modes” that allow the connector to carry signals of other protocols besides USB
Configuration Channel (CC): Used to negotiate and configure the connection for Alternate Mode; to determine which protocol will use the SBU lines
Upstream Facing Port (UFP): Typically found on a device that is connecting to a host (like a computer)
SBU in UFP: Typically used to enable a device to act as a source for DisplayPort or other protocols using the Alternate Mode capabilities of the Type-C connector
